I was really interested to read about your project of digitising trade directories. I work for [a] Borough Council; this and all other local authorities have a duty to identify areas of contaminated land under Environmental Protection Act 1990. One way of doing this is by using trade directories and historic maps to identify former potentially polluting industries, e.g. tinplaters, hatters, blacksmiths.
This duty to identify such sites is still in its infancy and many local authorities are just beginning to locate and capture information from trade directories.
