There are 3 ways in which you can find out more about our available stock on the Historical Directories web site. These are our Find by… options.

Find by… options

  1. Find by location takes you to a geographical map.
  2. Find by decade allows you to look up directories for the following periods:
    • pre-1850s (selection of directories from 1750 to 1849)
    • 1850s, 1860s, 1870s, 1880s, 1890s, 1900s, 1910s.
  3. Find by keywords enables you look for more specific directories.
    • Select from one or more of the drop-down menus
    • Enter your own keywords
    • See also the Notes at the bottom of the Keywords page.

Our Technical FAQs provide more details about entering your own keywords on this site. We also outline a number of advanced retrieval methods. These give better results than the Boolean Operators, AND, OR and NOT.
