Home > How to use this site
This page explains how you can browse a directory by hyperlinks or by jumping to a specific image number.
Browse a directory
To browse a directory you can do one of the following:
1. Click on the Fact File link in any results list.
The Fact File contains bibliographic information. It also provides hyperlinks to the main headings, or chapters, in the online directory. Click on any heading and you will then see the directory in browse mode.
2. Select the Browse Directory button
If you click on the Directory link in the results list, you will see the directory in search mode. To move into browse mode, click on the Browse Directory button at the top of the directory image.
What can I do in browse mode?
- You can view a directory on an image-by-image basis. Click on Previous Image or Next Image to move backwards and forwards.
- Zoom in and out, or view a single page in PDF format. Read more about viewing options later in this section.
- Also, you can jump to a specific image number. Enter an image number in the Go to box. For example, Go to image 50 of 900.
Notes on image numbering
- original directories contain pages. These pages are transformed into images when published online. This is why we use terms such as Next Image, rather than Next Page.
- page numbering in original directories was often a mixture of Arabic and Roman numerals. Additionally, the same number often appeared in multiple sections of a single volume.
- enter Go to image 50 of 900, as in the above example, and you will jump to the 50th consecutive image that we have published online. This may not correspond exactly with the original numbering, but it's a very useful way of moving through the online directory.
